We are lucky to have some amazing kids. I don't have a big or funny story to tell you tonight just a few little stories.
This morning John got dressed in our room. He told me "If I had a TV in my room, I would watch the news in the morning. Or even the weather channel."
I gave the kids each a mummy cookie for dessert. Gillian held it in her hand and said "This cookie is amazing!"
We received our Magic Bands for our Disney trip today. John was inspecting his band and said "Look! He put our name on the inside." I said "Who?" He said "Mickey Mouse!"
After bath, I dressed Gillian in her Ariel pajamas. She said "These are boring! I can't wear these!"
The fire whistle went off tonight shortly after the kids were put to bed. Gillian, who has come to terms with the whistle (see blog posts: Whistle Not Nice and Whistles and Babies ), started to scream. Daddy went to comfort her. She kept saying "It scared me!" Daddy calmed her down and once the whistle stopped, I heard John say "That whistle was killin me!"

the reveal
We are going Disney World over Thanksgiving weekend this year with Mimi, Poppy, Uncle T and Aunt Missy. A few weekends ago we revealed the news to the kids.
After we went pumpkin picking, Mimi and Poppy had John in their car and we had Gillian in our car. As Mimi & Poppy approached their house, Mimi pointed out some boxes on her front porch. She asked John to bring them inside for her. When he got to the front porch, he saw that the boxes had his name and Gillian's name on them. We brought the boxes inside and after looking at them closer, the kids saw that one was addressed to John and Gillian from Mickey and Minnie Mouse!
Below is a little video of the kids opening their box from Mickey and Minnie Mouse!
I love how each of them are excited in their own way. And how perfect is it that John asks to write Mickey for a calendar or a countdown?

pumpkin carving
| before carving |
By this point Daddy finished prepping John's big pumpkin and it was time for John to start pulling out the pumpkin guts. He was hilarious. He said "The insides of pumpkins are disgusting! I'm glad I'm wearing gloves. Cause I'm not touching that stuff." Gillian mocked him and said "I touch it!"
After awhile John got more comfortable and took off the gloves and helped to clean out his pumpkin. Gillian and John both told Daddy exactly what they wanted their jack-o-lantern to look like and Daddy carved away. I think they all came out really good.

weekend mornings
Daddy lets me sleep in on the weekends. I truly enjoy the extra time sleeping, but sometimes it isn't that simple. Daddy needs to remind John every night to "Not wake up Mommy. Do not go in and snuggle her, do not check on her, just go downstairs and play."
Saturday morning, John came downstairs and found Daddy in the living room. He said "Don't worry. I didn't go in and wake up Mommy. But I did blow her a kiss as I walked by."
This morning, I didn't hear John wake up. But I did hear Gillian wake up. She walked past our bedroom door and said "I awake now!" She then went downstairs and found Daddy. She told Daddy "I awake now! Where Mommy?" Daddy said "She is sleeping." Gillian asked "In her bed?" Daddy said "Of course!" Meanwhile, Johnny was looking for something to eat. Daddy told him, "There are pumpkin muffins in the kitchen." I guess John didn't trust Daddy and he stood at the bottom of the stairs and yelled "MOM! Can we have pumpkin muffins?" So much for sleeping in.

tickets - part two
Last Friday, I wrote Tickets. It was all about John and how he earns tickets at Time + (his aftercare program at school) for being quiet and well behaved during attendance. Last Friday, he had 9 tickets but on Monday, he earned his 10th ticket. He was so excited. When the kids have ten tickets, they get to pick something out of the big prize box. He picked out some sidewalk chalk.
Yesterday, I picked John up from school. As he was getting his backpack, one of the teachers was saying "John! Wait John." We stopped and she handed him a green ticket. She said "He picked up garbage on the playground without anyone asking him. As a thank you, he deserves another ticket." I thanked her and praised John. "I'm so proud of you John! That is very responsible of you to clean up after your friends." He said "I was just trying to help." So modest and responsible. But on our way into the car he said "I can't believe I got TWO tickets in one day! At this rate, I could have ten tickets in no time!"

The scientist
The other day, John said to Daddy "Don't worry Daddy! I don't want to be a firefighter anymore. I want to be a scientist!" Daddy was very happy to hear this and asked John, "Why do you want to be a scientist?" John said "Because I want to travel back in time to see how the dinosaurs got extinct."
Tonight I picked him up from school and he was complaining to me about how we missed the book fair. "I didn't get any new books. You know I want to be a scientist now. And I need a lot of books so I can figure out why the dinosaurs went extinct. I might even have to sleep in a library!"

the fireman
At dinner tonight, Gillian and I told John that tomorrow a fireman would be visiting Gillian's school. This made John very happy. If you remember a few weeks ago the fire department visited John's school and he really enjoyed it and learned a lot (check out Fire Safety). Anyway, we had John's attention. Gillian tells us "I like the fireman. But I don't have a hat. Maybe I can use Johnny's hat. But it needs stickers. I could decorate it." John's face said it all. He wasn't happy with his sister's idea. He said "I hope she isn't talking about my hat. I'm going to put it under maxima security! And she better not put any stickers on it!" I suggested that maybe the fireman would bring hats for everyone since John got his hat when the fire department visited his school. Gillian was very happy to hear that, but then she said "I get a hat. But what about Minnie?" Gillian has a small Minnie Mouse doll that she carries around everywhere. John took his hat and put it on Minnie and said "See Gill, it won't fit her!"

The whole thing
Since John started first grade, Daddy drops off Gillian at school every day except for Wednesday. Daddy told me his secret to a successful drop off. They listen to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse radio on Pandora in the car on the way to school. I took Gillian to school on Monday (because Daddy wasn't feeling so good) and we listened to the Mickey Mouse station on the way. As we pillows in the driveway for school, Gillian said "U want to hear the whole song!" And we had to sit in the car until that song was over. Today I picked her up from school. About a block from our house "Five little monkeys jumping on the bed" came on. Again as I pulled in our driveway Gillian said "I want to hear the whole song!" And we sat in the car until the song was over. I love that she wants to hear the music but one of these days I'm not going to have time to sit and the car and sing along with her. But for now I'm enjoying my time with my favorite little lady.

the joke
Have you ever seen that AT&T commercial with the kid that tells a joke and the other kid corrects him? Well here's the commercial in case you don't know what I'm talking about.
This morning, John pulled off the next number on our Disney countdown. Today's star had a joke on the back of it. Daddy read it to John, "When does Mickey Mouse put up his new calendar?" John said "I don't know." I said "On New Ears eve!" John said "You mean Year's!" Daddy said "No, ears, because that's what makes it funny!" John didn't get it.

Cows in the meadow
Aunt Betty came over today to help me decorate some Halloween cookies. We took a little break to eat dinner. After dinner, Gillian came upstairs and decided to sing a little song with Aunt Betty. Aunt Betty asked her to sing the alphabet song. Gillian had another idea. She grabbed Aunt Betty's hands and started singing "Ring around the Rosie, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down!" She and Aunt Betty sat down on the ground. Then Gillian said "The cows in a meadow." Aunt Betty said to me "What? Do you know those words?" I had never heard a second lyric to
"Ring around the Rosie." But apparently Gillian has, because she laughed at us and continued to sing "The cows in the meadow eating buttercups, ashes, ashes we all stand up!" And she made Aunt Betty stand up. Aunt Betty and I giggled, because we had never heard these words. But again, Gillian grabbed Aunt Betty's hands and started singing again "Ring around the Rosie, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down!" Gillian sat on the floor, but Aunt Betty only crouched. Gillian didn't like that. She said "Tushy on the ground!" After Aunt Betty sat on the ground, Gillian then said "Then do criss-cross applesauce." Aunt Betty did as Gillian said, and then Gillian said "Now I sit in your lap." And she sat in Aunt Betty's lap. The two of them laughed and then finished singing the song.

tickets
Since Daddy and I work full time, John needs to stay after school in the Time + Program. The program runs from after school until 6 pm. John loves it. Every day the kids are given time for a snack, then they work on their homework and then they have free time to play games or play outside. After the first week of school, John came home and told us "It got a ticket!" He further explained "We get tickets if we are quiet during attendance. If we get ten tickets we get to pick something out of the big prize box!" The next day, we asked him if he got a ticket. He told us "No! And I don't know why!"
It's been hard for him to get tickets. He currently has 9. Every day this week I have been asking if he has gotten the elusive 10th ticket. Every day we get a different story. Today, I asked him and he said "It's really hard for me. It's not just being quiet. I gotta sit still too. It's hard." I am glad that it is a challenge for him, but at the same time I hope he gets the 10th ticket soon.

The field trip
Gillian had her first field trip today. Her class got to visit Huber Woods. Since the trip was to a park, they allowed a lot of chaperones. I was able to sign up (along with 12 other moms and dads). Gillian and I got to her school this morning and we waited for all of her friends to arrive. While we waited, her teachers put a red shirt on all the kids. The front of the shirt had the school name and the back of the shirt said field trip. Not only did all the kids have on a field trip shirt, but they also had wristbands that had the school name and phone number too. Just in case the kids got separated from the group. Finally everyone arrived and we were able to get on the bus.
Gillian was so excited. She had never been on a school bus before. She sat next to me and was sad that she couldn't see out the window. But she still had a good time singing "The wheels on the bus" with her friends. After a short but bumpy ride, we arrived at the park. The class got split in half and Gillian and I were put into Miss Debbie's group. Our first stop was pumpkin picking. The park had a small fenced area where there were pumpkins laying on the ground for the kids to choose one. Once again, we were split into two groups so that the kids wouldn't trample each other. But I am sure you can imagine, wrangling 12 three year olds is pretty close to impossible. Luckily it didn't take them long to choose their pumpkins and before we knew it, it was Gillian's turn to pick one. Gillian picked up the first one she saw. I had to reject it, because it had a little rotten spot on the back. She wasn't happy with my decision, but picked a different one and I had her pose with her new pumpkin.

Our next stop was inside the lodge. We learned about mammals and the park ranger asked the kids if they knew of any animals. A couple of kids named a few. Gillian shouted "Pigs!" The park ranger then started to tell the kids about flying squirrels and how they really don't fly, that they just glide from tree to tree. The ranger said "Wouldn't it be cool to be a flying squirrel? You get to jump from tree to tree looking for food!" Gillian shouted "NO!" Got to love her honesty. The kids then made a flying squirrel glider and we got to go back outside and try them out.
The next stop was to a classroom. We got to meet a few of the animals that are at the park. We learned about snakes and got to see three of them. All the kids kept asking if they could touch the snakes, but not Gillian. "I not going to touch them!" After the snakes, the ranger took out two box turtles. One was named Scooter and the other was Rosie. Gillian heard the names and said loudly "Just like you Mommy!" Scooter was a fast turtle and ran across the room. Again, Gillian said "I no touch them!" The ranger was telling us more about the turtles and she took out a paper towel to hold under Scooter. She told the group "He needs a diaper. I like to call him Sir Poops-a-lot!" The kids thought this was hilarious (this was also one thing that Gillian told John about her trip).
Our last stop was a hay ride. The kids loved the hayride. They all said "It's so bumpy!" By the time we were done with our tour of the park, a lot of the kids had droopy eyes and looked like they were going to fall asleep. It was a great morning. I am so glad I got to spend it with my little lady.

The boyfriend
Tonight in the car, Gillian told John and I, "I have a girlfriend." John said "You mean, you are someone's girlfriend." She said "Yea, I a girlfriend." John asked her, "Who's your boyfriend?" She proudly announced "Nicholas!" She has been talking about Nicholas for awhile now. A few weeks ago, she told me that she pushed Julia off of the seesaw because she couldn't see Nicholas. So I wasn't too surprised when she said he was her boyfriend. She then said "We go to the beach together!" I didn't understand this statement, so I said "What?" She said "We was in the sandbox and pretending it was the beach!"

Excuse me
At dinner tonight, Daddy and I were talking but Gillian was trying to get Daddy's attention. "Excuse me. Daddy, excuse me. Daddy. Daddy. Daddy. Excuse me." Finally Daddy stopped to ask Gillian what she needed. She said "I have more broccoli?" You can't say no to that request. Daddy gave her more broccoli and she said "It looks like trees! I a giant. I eat trees!"
Also at dinner tonight, John asked us "Do you want me to sing a song I learned in music class?" Again, how do you say no to that?
John sang his song. When he was done, he said "Normally I end it like this." And he dramatically put his hands out to his side. Then he said "The teacher doesn't complain when I do it." So Daddy said, "Then keep doing it." Gillian listened to John sing and then said "I sing ABCs." And she made me record her singing too. And for the record, I have no idea what she says at the end of the video.

a big pumpkin
Today we met Mimi, Poppy, Uncle T and Aunt Missy for breakfast and then went pumpkin picking. If you remember, last year (check out last year's post: pumpkin picking) John had very specific criteria for the perfect pumpkin. The pumpkin had to be round, not too dirty and a stem. This year, he wasn't that specific. He was just looking for a pumpkin.
However, Gillian wanted a BIG pumpkin. She looked at every pumpkin and she kept pointing out the biggest pumpkins. She found one when she was searching with Aunt Miss and she tried to move it herself.
We found two pumpkins. One nice round one and one that is lumpy. I think the lumpy one will look really cool when Daddy carves it. After we found our perfect pumpkins, we got a bag of carrots and we walked around to feed the animals. Gillian was a little afraid to let the animals take the carrot out of her hand. She would drop it as soon as they attempted to grab it. After awhile, they both got more comfortable with the animals and Gillian would talk to them. "Him's a baby and that's the mommy!" "Them's like the carrots."
After Daddy, Aunt Missy and the kids fed all the animals, I tried to get a quick picture of the kids in front of an inflatable pumpkin with a cat on it. Gillian liked the cat from far away, but once we suggested that she stand in front of it, she said no. But I got a really cute picture of John with the pumpkin.

the picnic
While I was taking a shower this morning, there was a knock on the door. I knew it was John. We are teaching the kids to knock on closed doors before they enter them. John is doing really well with this process, Gillian is not. Anyway, there was a knock on my door. I told John to come in. I stuck my head out of the shower and asked "What's the matter John?" He asked me "Can we have a picnic in the living room?" How can you say no to that? Well I couldn't. I told him yes and he went running.
I finished my shower and as I was brushing my teeth, there was another knock on my door. He was back. I let him in and he said "Just be careful. We put the dog in the kitchen. So don't let him out. Okay?" Smart little boy. He gated Duncan into the kitchen so he wouldn't interrupt the picnic. I got downstairs and saw that they had spread out a blanket on the floor. There were four plastic cups on each side of the blanket. And John was looking for some paper plates. I showed him where to find the plates, and he handed them to Gillian. Gillian put them next to the cups on the blanket. John asked me "Do you have any little pieces of paper? I want to write everyone's name on the paper so that they know where to sit. And maybe I should write a menu." I gave him some sticky notes to write the place cards, but I told him that we didn't need to write out a menu. I asked him what he would like to eat for his picnic. He didn't know. He picked out some cookies and rice krispie treats for snacks. But he kept saying "We need a main meal. What should we have as a main meal?" I ended up making them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
All four of us sat down for the picnic. The kids munched away on their sandwiches. Gillian told us "I don't like the crust. Cut it off!" I told her "You need to eat the crust. It makes your hair curly." I should have told her this earlier. She ate her entire sandwich. After each bite, she would touch her hair as if to see if it was curly.
Overall, we had a fabulous picnic lunch with our kids. I am so glad that they worked as a team to set it up for us.

Ponies and dragons
I picked up Gillian from school today. When we were both in the car, I asked her how school was today. She didn't respond right away. And finally she said "My friends got sick. My friend Leo and Sophina." I said "What happened to Sophia?" "No Mommy! Sooopphhinnnaa!" I've never heard of this friend before, but again I said "What happened?" She said "Leo and Sophina went to the hospital. I don't want to talk about it anymore." And she stopped talking for a few minutes. Then she said "I want to be Twilight Sparkle. You can be Rarity. Daddy can be Applejack." (For those who don't know, Gillian is talking about My Little Pony. Check out this older post to learn about the Ponies). I said, "I'm not sure Daddy wants to be Applejack. I think he likes to be Big Macintosh." "But I want him to be Applejack. My whole family is ponies. I Twilight Sparkle. You Rarity. Johnny is Rainbow Dash and Daddy is Applejack." It's hard to argue with that. I said "Ok, what about Uncle T?" Gillian said "No, Uncle T." I said "What about Aunt Missy?" Gillian said "Aunt Missy can be Pinkie Pie. Aunt Betty can be Fluttershy cause her afraid of dragons. Not me. I laugh at dragons." I said "There's a pink dragon? I never heard of a pink dragon." Gillian said "Yea, there a pink dragon. Fluttershy is afraid of it. Not me. I not afraid." She then proceeded to have a little conversation with herself and all the characters and how they saw the pink dragon and how they had to help Fluttershy to get away from the pink dragon.

How was your day?
Tonight at dinner, we asked the kids about their days. Gillian said "I play with Nicholas and Sophia. I sit in timeout chair." I asked her why she had to go to timeout. She said "I didn't stay on my mat at naptime." At least she is honest.
We asked John the same question. He needed a little more prodding and prompting in order to get some info out of him. I said "Did you have your picture taken today?" He said "Yea. But I didn't bring it home." I asked "Did you get to play outside today or inside today at recess?" John said "Inside." I am loving these short answers. Now I ask him, "Did you learn any friends names today?" "John said "There really wasn't time. I did try but that boy seemed really busy." I decided to change the subject, "Did you take a picture with your whole class?" "Yea, but I didn't bring that one home either." Daddy completely changed the subject, he asked "Name one place that you would love to visit." John at first said "The Statue of Deliveries." He paused and then said "The Statute of Liverity. But that's far away." Daddy explained that the statue isn't far from home and that maybe one day we could go visit it.

Let's talk
Every night, I go and check on the kids after bedtime. Gillian still takes a nap at school, so most nights when I check on her (around 9) she is still awake. Last night, she was awake and she invited me into her bed to snuggle with her. I snuggled up with her and asked her to tell me about her She told me "My friends like my sparkly nails (we had just painted her fingernails and toenails)." She then paused and I thought she was done talking to me. So I kissed her again, and said I will see you in the morning. She said "Let's talk about Santa Claus!" She was so matter of fact and I had a feeling like I was being set up. But I responded with "What about Santa Claus?" Gillian said "Him is nice. Him bring me and Johnny presents!" I said "Really? What kind of presents would you like him to bring you this year?" She didn't hesitate and said "Babies. I want more babies. And a little table and chairs for my babies. So they can have a tea party and a picnic." And then as if she just remembered she had a brother she added "And presents for Johnny too!"

Missed the bus
We were about a minute too late to get the bus this morning. As I locked the front door, I saw the bus drive past our street. It was totally my fault. I should have gotten us outside earlier. But I thought, it's Monday so the bus would probably be late. Well I was wrong. I told John that we missed the bus. He was so mad. "Are you sure?" I said "Yes, I just saw the bus drive past. Number 15!" John shook his head, "My bus is number 2!" Yes, the school has numbered his bus as bus two, but the bus is actually 15. He said "What are we going to do now?" I told him "Get into the car and I'll drop you off." He said "Great! That's not the same as taking the bus!" He can be so dramatic. I explained to him that I can drop him off at school and he could wait in the cafeteria until it was time to go to his classroom. He said "I don't want to. I'm going to be the only one in the cafeteria!" I explained to him that he would not be the only kid and that lots of kids get dropped off. He pouted until we got to school. We waited outside school until they opened the doors and then he ran inside. He didn't even slow down to give me a kiss.
Tonight I asked him if he liked getting dropped off or taking the bus better. He said "The bus is longer!" Thanks. That explains everything.

Waffles
Gillian likes to sleep in on the weekends. This morning, she found me in the kitchen. After I got my morning kisses and squeezies, she asked me "What you doing?" I told her that I was making waffles. She said "OK I help!" If you have ever had the assistance of a 3 year old, you know I wasn't thrilled to have a helper. But I moved a chair over to the counter and Gillian assisted me with the measuring cups. She helped with all the ingredients and mixed the batter while I set up the waffle iron. She told me "That hot. I no touch it!" Smarty pants. Since she couldn't help with finishing the waffles, I gave her the forks and plates to set the table. I also asked her to call Johnny and Daddy and let them know breakfast was ready. She yelled "Dinner ready!" Very close. Luckily the boys knew what she meant. The boys complimented us on the yummy breakfast. Gillian proudly said "I helped!"

The haircut
Earlier this week, I asked Miss Brittany if she would cut John's hair this weekend. Miss Brittany is our neighbor (she is also Mr. Matt's wife) and she is a hairdresser. I wasn't sure if she would be comfortable cutting a little boy's hair. But she said she would be happy to give John a haircut. We made plans to meet her today.
Tonight John and I walked over to Miss Brit's house. We knocked on the back door and walked into their kitchen. Miss Brit asked John "How do you want your hair cut?" John looked at me and then said "You know! You tell her." I explained to Miss Brit, that John wanted a faux hawk. I also told Miss Brit, that I thought John's hair was a little too short for a faux hawk and that it probably needed to grow more. She agreed and we decided to cut the sides short and leave the top longer this way maybe next time he could get a faux hawk. After we decided what the plan was, Miss Brittany starting cutting with the clippers. John is very used to clippers. Daddy has been giving John buzz cuts for a long time. John sat very still and Miss Brittany asked John how school was. John gave some short one word answers and then I prompted him with "Tell Miss Brit who came to visit school on Friday." That prompted John to tell her all about the firemen that visited school and about fire drills and lockdown drills and fire safety. He was chatting away when there was a knock on the back door. Aunt Missy arrived! (Aunt Missy and Uncle T were going to visit Mr. Matt and Miss Brittany for dinner tonight.) Miss Brittany finished John's hair. What a difference it made! He looks so grown up.
I tried to stay and talk with the girls. But John was not having any of it. He was ready to go. And since I wasn't moving fast enough, he just started pouting in the middle of the kitchen. We said our goodbyes and we walked home. It is so nice to just walk next door and get John's hair cut by someone we know and trust. Thanks Miss Brittany!

Fire Safety
Gillian and I picked up John from school today. We noticed that there was a plastic fireman's hat in his backpack. I asked John if a fireman came to school today. He said "Yes! We learned about fire safety." I asked him to tell Gillian what that means. He said to Gillian "You can't play with matches or lighters or fire. You know why? Because then you would lose everything that you love the most. You know what that is? You would lose your Baby!" Gillian said "I no play with fire!" He said "And Mom, you know what? In the kitchen, you should put a rug in front of the oven. And then you should tell Gillian that she can't play by the rug. And you know what? You should also put something on the handles of the pots. That way Gillian can't get hurt. And you need to not let the candles go to the ceiling! And we should clean out the garage. We need to make sure all the matches and stuff that makes fire is put away." He kept going, and I said, "We should remember about the candles." Gillian said "Yes. The candles." I asked Gillian, "Do you remember what do with the candles?" She said "You put them in the cake!" Everything always goes back to dessert with this one. But John didn't miss a beat, "No, Gillian, we need to make sure the candles don't go up to the ceiling. And we should only use them in case of emergency. And only adults should light them!"
When we got to the house, I was able to tape John telling me some fire safety tips.
When Daddy got home, John told Daddy "I got to see the inside of a fire truck today!" Daddy asked him what you are supposed to do if you get caught on fire. John said "First you stop (and he stuck out his arms). Next, you drop (and he fell to the ground). Then you roll (and he rolled all over the floor)." John truly enjoyed having the fire department visit his school and he learned a lot today.

Seatbelt and coffee
Gillian and I were singing "The wheels on the bus" last night. She sang a few few verses and when we got to "the people on the bus go up and down." She sang that verse and said "They wouldn't go up and down if they have a seatbelt!" Good observation Gillian.
This morning, Daddy asked the kids "What do you want to drink with breakfast?" Before Gillian could answer, Daddy said "You want coffee? Okay!" Gillian nodded and said "I need a cup!" She got up and asked me, "Mommy, you get my Mindy cup?" She was pointing to her Minnie Mouse Tervis cup. I couldn't believe what I was watching. I didn't know of she wanted that cup because Mommy and Daddy drink their coffee in Tervis cups or if she just wanted to use that cup. Well that lasted two seconds, because once she got her cup she asked for milk. And to think I thought she was going to want coffee. It wouldn't have been the first time.

2nd Anniversary
Two years ago today, I posted my first blog entry. I started it as a way to remember all the little things my kids say or do. I hope you enjoyed all the posts from the past year. Here are a few of my favorites:
I hope you enjoyed walking down memory lane with me. Here's to another year of John & Gill's adventures.
